LIVING WATERS by Maria Bardoel
Living Waters is the result of a mixed paint pour on a china plate in a manner much like engobe. It invokes an image of wild, rushing, clear and clean, fresh waters of the Canadian watersheds. In researching Canada’s watersheds, I have discovered that Canada’s water drains through five main watersheds each of which is supported by several sub basins: The Pacific Ocean Watershed; the Arctic Ocean Watershed; The Atlantic Ocean Watershed; The Gulf of Mexico Watershed and The Hudson’s Bay Watershed, the latter through which approximately 30% of Canada’s water drains. The Hudson’s Bay Watershed includes portions of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Northwest Territories and Nunavut as well as the four American states of Montana, North and South Dakota and Minnesota [www.canadiangeographic.com] What impresses me is how interconnected we are, as Canadians, through our water, not only across provinces and territories but also with our American neighbours. The phrase “Act locally, think globally” comes to mind which encourages people to consider the health of the entire planet and to take action in their own communities. Water is a precious resource without which we cannot survive. It is now a dwindling resource in many areas of the world. Every Canadian needs to be aware of this fact and take responsibility for guarding this national treasure for our future survival. Canadians need to heed the warning of the demise of the Aral Sea.
