KAWARTHA ART GALLERY PRESENTS
A publicly accessible digital archive documenting artworks and careers — ensuring artistic legacies remain visible, contextualized, and active over time.
ABOUT THE INDEX
Preserving the art.
Honouring the artist.
Every artist leaves behind a body of work that tells a story — of a community, a time, a life fully lived. The Artist Index was created so those stories don't disappear.
The Kawartha Art Gallery has long been a home for artists in our region. Over the years, we have received inquiries from families of artists who have passed away, seeking a place to preserve their loved one's legacy. While we cannot always receive works physically, we can offer something enduring: a dedicated, professionally maintained digital record of an artist's life and work.
Whether you are a living artist looking to document your career, a family honouring someone who has passed, or a senior artist wishing to secure your creative legacy, The Artist Index is here for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Your questions, answered.
Who is The Artist Index for?
The Artist Index welcomes living artists, senior artists, and the families or estates of artists who have passed away. If you are looking for a permanent, professionally maintained home for an artist's body of work, this service is for you.
How many images can I include?
Each artist listing can include up to 24 images, giving space to represent multiple decades and periods of an artist's career. Images are displayed in a beautiful slideshow format on the artist's dedicated profile page.
What is an audio artist statement?
Instead of (or in addition to) a written artist statement, artists have the option to be recorded in-gallery by Kawartha Art Gallery staff. This recording is embedded on the artist's page so that visitors can hear the artist speak about their work in their own voice.
How long will my listing be available?
Artist listings on The Artist Index are intended to be permanent. Once published, your profile will remain publicly accessible and maintained by the Kawartha Art Gallery as part of the region's ongoing artistic record.
Can the Gallery accept physical artwork?
Unfortunately, the Gallery does not have the space to receive physical collections at this time. The Artist Index was created specifically to offer an alternative — a meaningful digital record that honours a career without requiring storage.
What do I need to submit for an artist who has passed?
For estate or family submissions, an application is required along with documentation confirming the artist's passing. Please reach out via the contact form below if you have any questions about this process — we are here to help.
Is this a donation or a paid service?
The Artist Index is a fee-based service, not a donation platform. A one-time payment secures your artist listing, which is then professionally built and maintained by the Gallery. Pricing information is available in the section above.
Can I update my listing after it goes live?
Please contact the Gallery directly using the form below to discuss any updates or changes to an existing listing. We are happy to help keep your profile current.
