A COMMUNITY INITIATIVE
Protect Participation.
Strengthen Democracy.
Ensuring everyone can participate in public life free from harassment, intimidation, and technology-facilitated abuse.
Democracy works best when everyone feels safe to participate.
The Mission
Strong communities are built on active participation, respectful dialogue, and diverse leadership.
The mission of this initiative is to strengthen democracy by fostering a culture where everyone can participate in public life free from harassment, intimidation, threats, and technology-facilitated abuse. An advocacy platform that is committed to promoting respectful civic engagement, supporting those who serve their communities, and advocating for practical solutions that make participation safer and more inclusive.
While anyone can experience harassment, research and lived experience show that women in public life are disproportionately targeted by online abuse and gender-based intimidation. By addressing these barriers, we help create a healthier democracy that benefits everyone.
The Vision
For communities where every person feels empowered to share ideas, seek public office, volunteer, advocate for change, and contribute to civic life without fear.
-
"Disagreement strengthens democracy. Harassment weakens it."
ON HEALTHY DEBATE
-
"Public debate should be driven by ideas — not intimidation."
ON PUBLIC DISCOURSE
-
"Leadership should be encouraged — not silenced."
ON LEADERSHIP
The Petition
This is a call on municipal, provincial, and federal governments to take meaningful action to protect those who participate in public life from harassment and technology-facilitated abuse. Governments are being urged to:
-
01
Strengthen legal protections against persistent online harassment and coordinated intimidation.
-
02
Encourage social media and technology platforms to adopt stronger safety-by-design principles and improve responses to harmful content.
-
03
Support elected officials, candidates, journalists, advocates, and community leaders facing targeted harassment.
-
04
Promote initiatives that encourage women and underrepresented groups to participate fully in civic and political life.
-
05
Invest in education and prevention strategies that foster respectful online and offline engagement.
Why This Matters
Healthy democracies depend on people who are willing to step forward, share their ideas, volunteer, advocate for change, and serve their communities. When harassment, intimidation, and technology-facilitated abuse become normalized, people withdraw from public life. Communities lose experienced leaders, diverse perspectives, and opportunities for meaningful dialogue. Research and lived experience show that women are disproportionately affected by these forms of abuse, creating additional barriers to participation and representation.
Disagreement is an essential part of democracy. Respectful debate, scrutiny of public officials, and the exchange of different viewpoints make institutions stronger. What has no place in a healthy democracy are threats, intimidation, and abuse designed to silence voices or drive people away from public life.
“The strength of a democracy is measured not by the absence of disagreement, but by the ability of its people to participate without fear.”

Protect Participation. Strengthen Democracy.
Democracy works best when everyone feels safe to participate.
People are not being asked to agree with one another.
What is being asked is that everyone can participate without fear.
Together, communities can be built where leadership is encouraged, public discourse is respectful, and diverse voices are welcomed and valued. When those who step forward to serve are protected, so are the democratic values that unite a community.
This campaign is rooted in hope. It is founded on the belief that the best future is one in which more people, not fewer, feel inspired to participate, lead, volunteer, and contribute to public life.
This is not simply a response to harassment. It is an effort to build a community where courage is supported, participation is celebrated, and democracy is strengthened through respect, inclusion, and civic engagement.
