EMPTY SEATS: Meet the Artist - Christina Patton
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Christina Patton is a graphic designer and artist born and raised in Lindsay, Ontario. Since graduating from the Haliburton School of Art + Design in 2019, Christina has actively supported local arts initiatives, including her ongoing work with the Kawartha Lakes Arts Council. As a freelance designer specializing in brand and web design, she helps businesses and organizations tell their stories through thoughtful, strategic visual communication.
Beyond her client work, Christina brings her creativity into public spaces and community projects – most notably through her 100-foot alleyway mural in downtown Lindsay, her sponge cloth designs for Unwrapped, and her involvement in local arts, cultural, and community events throughout the area. At the heart of her work is a commitment to amplifying creativity, building connections, and making a lasting impact in her community.
EXHIBITION STATEMENT
For this series, I drew inspiration from traditional quilt patterns – an enduring symbol of creativity, connection, and community. Quilting has long brought women together to share stories, skills, and support, creating spaces where voices could be heard and relationships could flourish. I was also inspired by the quilt stars that adorn barns across our area, which serve as colourful symbols of heritage and belonging.
Created digitally, these designs combine familiar quilt-inspired patterns with slogans that address the very real issue of harassment faced by women in public life. I was interested in the contrast between the warmth and beauty of the imagery and the weight of the words they carry. By pairing these elements together, the work reflects both the strength found in community and the importance of protecting spaces where women can participate, lead, and be heard.
