Discover the Profound Connection in We and the Beasts Are Kin
From May 13th to June 7th, 2025, delve into the heart of our Permanent Collection with the evocative exhibit, "We and the Beasts Are Kin." Inspired by the insightful words of E.T. Seton, this powerful showcase features eight compelling artworks that illuminate the delicate balance of our shared world.
Through these pieces, explore the critical factors that pose a threat to eleven distinct species, prompting reflection on the intricate web of life that binds us all. Experience the artistry and the urgent message of interconnectedness in "We and the Beasts Are Kin" – a journey that will deepen your understanding of our relationship with the natural world.
Inspired by this quote from naturalist, author, and wildlife artist Ernest Thompson Seton, this exhibit explores the factors that threaten eleven animal species featured in eight pieces of art from the Permanent Collection, demonstrating the interconnectedness of all beings.
This exhibit has been an opportunity for the Gallery to gain significant insights about the various animals’ conservation statuses and the threats that they face.
These insights reinforced the truth and meaning behind the exhibit title – we are all kin. There is no issue that stands alone, that is not shaped by or related to other issues. When one species is threatened, the whole ecosystem is threatened.
It is our sincere hope that we will all come to have more compassion for our neighbours, current and future, human and animal alike and that we will speak up the global- scale changes that must be made to protect our kin for generations to come.

ABOUT OUR PERMANENT COLLECTION
Incorporated in 1976 as a not-for-profit charity, Kawartha Art Gallery is the only public Art Gallery in the City of Kawartha Lakes by virtue of our provincial designation and the Permanent Collection.
One of the first goals for the Gallery back in 1976 was to acquire an outstanding permanent collection of Canadian artworks. These artworks would be housed and taken care of by the Gallery but would belong to the citizens of the City of Kawartha Lakes.
The Collection now numbers over one hundred artworks by Canadian artists of regional and international recognition, including six original artworks by the Group of 7 artist, A. J. Casson.
The Collection is on display year-round in the Gallery and we welcome you to visit the Gallery, Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, to get to know your Permanent Collection.
