Artist Statement:

My work in this exhibition is inspired by my interests in mental health and self-expression, which I visually explore through a mix of beauty and tension. I view my own work as the most intimate representation of myself, as it is a visual statement coming directly from my own brain. I am always looking for the beauty in what some may consider “ugly concepts”.

I focus on illustrating and painting people, as I find that I like my work to be mostly self-explanatory with some open interpretation, so I would rather paint people than just pure metaphorical themes. I use a specific way of paint application with a mixture of different colours and tones to continue to show dramatized feelings with simple portraiture to contrast the two themes together.

By painting people, I find it is easier for the viewer to insert themselves into the painting and view it as if the painting is of them. The common themes allow viewers to fully understand the communication between the feelings and meanings I have visually displayed with themselves.
