Artist Statement:
My collection of work explores different ways in which memory can be represented, because I want to explore the reliability of my memories and how they construct a story in one’s mind. I like to use distortion and other visual qualities to represent the way that I see the experience of life and aging through my memories, and to investigate how that differs from the perception that other people have, or from reality.
I often focus on imagery that was prominent in my childhood, whether it is from storybooks, photos I took, or from my memories alone. I like to use natural or whimsical details to emphasise the difference between the way I view my memories and the way that the events actually happened. I have a lot of juxtaposition between harsh black and white contrast and flowing pastel colours used to represent the distortion that the mind inflicts on a person’s memories.
I use universally recognizable imagery of childhood or the passage of time that represent the relatable experience of growing up, especially as an only child. These elements also help to investigate how my own mind works, and to represent my unique experience.
