Sandra Ackert’s artistic practice is deeply influenced by her longstanding connection to the countryside and the changing landscapes around her. Working primarily in acrylic on large canvases, as well as watercolour and acrylic on paper, Ackert explores everyday landscapes through a process of simplification and reduction. Her work seeks a sense of freedom and independence, distilling the familiar environment around her into more minimal and expressive interpretations.
Born in Toronto, Ackert moved to Chatham, Ontario, after marrying, where she began developing her artistic practice through workshops at the Chatham Cultural Centre. She became involved with a group of artists known as Studio Ten, further developing her work through shared experiences and artistic exchange.
In 1974, Ackert moved to Lindsay, Ontario, where she became an important figure in the local arts community. In 1976, she was a founding member of the Lindsay Gallery, now Kawartha Art Gallery, and went on to serve as Chair of the Board of Governors and lead numerous committees. Her involvement extended beyond Gallery administration and into arts education, including teaching as an art instructor through the Adult Education Program at Sir Sandford Fleming College.
Travel has also played an important role in Ackert’s artistic practice. She has participated in painting trips throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in England, France, Italy, and Mexico, drawing continued inspiration from the diverse landscapes and environments she encounters.
